If you’ve never cringed while watching a video of your power moves…
- a big fat liar OR
- you’ve never seen yourself on video.
And you cringe because you didn’t like the way you did those moves! You might even have come close to rock bottom, muttering “I was never born to do power moves so f*** it. I give up.”
After cringing at your own moves (ugh), remember why you even self-record your moves. It isn’t just to see if you look good. You want to pinpoint and root out the problems in the move!
You already know there’s a problem in that particular power move. You just don’t know what it is.
At this stage, understand this: you already know the basic technique needed for the move. You’re just not really there yet… All because you neglected the mistakes you’re making.
Over the years in teaching students, I’ve seen many of them make the same big errors in power moves. Over and over. In fact, the mistakes are done so often… I’d be blind not to notice a pattern staring in my face.
And one of these basic power moves that most bboys have tried is the swipe.
The swipe is easy to pick up (relatively), but tricky if you want to make it look good.
How do you make the swipes look so dope that people can’t ignore such a common power move? You clean up the technique. It’s time for you to polish the raw diamond that’s already in your hands.
But hey, don’t practice blindly. What do you need to do then?
Break down and understand the problems you already have.
Are your hands in the right position? Are you facing the right way? How are you landing? Which part of you is not holding up? Are your legs actually kicking or just moving for the sake of it? Those are questions you’re likely to ask when you encounter the few big swipe mistakes.
To make it easy for you to identify your mistake(s), watch the video below. It’s 7 minutes in length, but it will save you 70 hours of unnecessary and blind training.
Psst… Here are the timings to each segment:
If you’re not that familiar with swipes, I’m sure you’ll find a gem in there that will help you improve with your power.
Were there other mistakes that you noticed weren’t in the video? Let me know in the comments below and we’ll talk. Who knows? There might be a part 2 in future.
